Open Gear Greases - Hose Couplings and Petroleum Products

Open gear greases are high-load lubricants used on exposed gears and deck machinery in marine environments. For marine hose couplings handling petroleum products, lubricant selection must be compatible with hose materials, coupling seals, and the conveyed product; petroleum grease is not universally suitable.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Open Gear Greases for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification No single universal certification applies to all open gear greases. Selection should follow the equipment manufacturer’s lubricant specification, OEM approval, SDS, and compatibility data. For petroleum-transfer hoses and couplings, applicable hose and marine transfer requirements may include EN 1765, EN 13765, ISO 1823, or OCIMF guidance where relevant.
Class Approval Classification approval is generally not inherent to a grease product. Acceptance may depend on the vessel’s class requirements, equipment maker approval, and approved maintenance procedures. DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s Register, BV, and ClassNK requirements may apply to the equipment or operation rather than the lubricant itself.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Clean old grease and contaminants before application. Apply only the quantity specified by the equipment manufacturer. For hose couplings, use lubricant approved for the seal material and petroleum service; avoid allowing grease to contaminate the hose bore or transferred cargo.
Maintenance Tips Inspect exposed gears and coupling threads for wear, corrosion, water contamination, and hardening. Reapply at the manufacturer’s interval and after heavy washing or water exposure. Do not mix different grease types unless compatibility is confirmed.
Safety Notes Review the safety data sheet before use and wear suitable gloves and eye protection. Keep grease away from hot surfaces and ignition sources. Prevent slips on decks and dispose of contaminated rags and waste according to vessel and port environmental procedures.
