AIS - Navigation and Communication

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a shipboard navigation and communication system that automatically exchanges vessel identity, position, course, speed and voyage data over VHF. It supports collision avoidance, vessel traffic monitoring and maritime situational awareness.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply AIS for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Common standards include IMO MSC.74(69), IMO MSC.308(88), ITU-R M.1371, IEC 61993-2 for Class A AIS, IEC 62287-1 or IEC 62287-2 for Class B AIS, and IEC 61162 for marine data interfaces. SOLAS Chapter V defines carriage requirements for applicable vessels.
Class Approval Marine AIS equipment may receive type approval or product certification from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK and RINA, depending on manufacturer, model and vessel flag requirements.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install the transponder in a dry, accessible, vibration-controlled location with suitable ventilation. Connect approved VHF and GNSS antennas, heading input, power supply and required navigation interfaces. Maintain antenna separation and use correctly terminated, shielded marine cables.
Maintenance Tips Inspect antenna cables, connectors, bonding and mounting regularly. Verify MMSI, call sign, vessel name, dimensions and voyage data after configuration changes. Check GNSS position, heading input, alarms and transmitted data during planned tests without transmitting false information.
Safety Notes Installation and configuration should be performed by qualified marine electronics personnel. AIS is an aid to navigation and must not replace visual lookout, radar or proper watchkeeping. Confirm MMSI and static data before transmission, and follow vessel procedures for radio-frequency exposure and electrical isolation.
