SART - Navigation and Communication
A Search and Rescue Transponder (SART) is a GMDSS locating device carried on ships and survival craft. Radar SARTs respond to X-band radar, while AIS-SARTs transmit identification and position data to nearby AIS-equipped vessels and rescue units.
ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply SART for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval
Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.
| Applicable Standards & Certification | Typically approved under SOLAS Chapter III and the IMO GMDSS requirements. Radar SARTs commonly conform to IMO A.802(19) and IEC 61097-1. AIS-SARTs commonly conform to IMO MSC.246(83), IEC 61097-14 and applicable ITU-R requirements. Approval is model-specific. |
|---|---|
| Class Approval | Approval is normally issued through the flag administration or recognized certification body, with type approval or product certification accepted by societies such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas and ClassNK where applicable. Verification is required for the specific model. |
Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information
| Installation Notes | Store in the designated survival-craft equipment location with the mounting bracket and operating instructions accessible. In an emergency, extend the antenna, switch to the required mode and position the unit vertically as high as practical in the lifeboat or liferaft. |
|---|---|
| Maintenance Tips | Perform periodic inspections and tests in accordance with the manufacturer manual and the vessel's GMDSS maintenance plan. Check battery expiry, seals, antenna, housing, controls and self-test indication. Replace batteries only with approved service parts. |
| Safety Notes | Use only approved batteries and do not open or modify the sealed unit onboard. Avoid unnecessary transmission tests, follow radio-frequency safety precautions and dispose of expired batteries through approved procedures. Confirm the device type before testing because radar SART and AIS-SART test methods differ. |
