Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19 requires appropriate and up-to-date nautical charts or an approved ECDIS arrangement. Relevant standards include IMO MSC.232(82), IHO S-57, IHO S-101, IHO S-63, and applicable national hydrographic-office requirements.
Class Approval Charts themselves are generally issued or authorized by hydrographic authorities rather than class societies. ECDIS equipment used for carriage compliance may be type-approved by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or ClassNK, subject to flag-state requirements.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Store paper charts flat in a dry chart table or approved chart cabinet. Load digital charts and permits only into compatible, type-approved ECDIS or chartplotter systems, then verify coverage, license validity, datum, and update status.
Maintenance Tips Keep paper charts corrected using official Notices to Mariners. Apply ENC updates promptly, maintain valid permits and backups, verify chart update status before each voyage, and replace damaged or obsolete charts.
Safety Notes Use the latest officially corrected chart data and maintain an appropriate backup navigation arrangement. Do not rely solely on unofficial recreational chart data for SOLAS navigation. Confirm chart datum, scale, survey quality, depths, hazards, and navigational warnings before use.
