AIS Antennas - Navigation and Communication

Marine AIS antennas are dedicated VHF antennas designed for transmitting and receiving Automatic Identification System signals in the 156–162 MHz maritime band. They are installed with Class A or Class B AIS transponders and require suitable coaxial cable, connectors, grounding, and a clear mounting location.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply AIS Antennas for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification AIS installations are generally specified with IEC 60945 marine navigation and radiocommunication equipment requirements and IEC 61993-2 for shipborne Class A AIS equipment. Antenna performance and installation should follow the transceiver manufacturer’s instructions.
Class Approval AIS antennas are not normally approved independently of the AIS radio installation. Type approval or acceptance may apply to the complete AIS system by societies such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, or ClassNK.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Mount vertically in a clear location with maximum practical height and separation from other transmitting antennas. Use 50-ohm marine coaxial cable, correctly rated connectors, weatherproof cable entries, and secure bonding or grounding where required. Keep cable runs short and avoid sharp bends.
Maintenance Tips Inspect the antenna, bracket, fasteners, connector, and coaxial cable for corrosion, looseness, water ingress, or physical damage. Check VSWR and AIS transmission performance during planned radio inspections. Replace damaged seals and weatherproofing materials.
Safety Notes Isolate AIS and radio transmitters before maintenance. Keep personnel clear of transmitting antennas during operation. Follow vessel procedures for working aloft, electrical isolation, fall protection, and RF exposure.
