Air Coolers - Main Engine and Propulsion

Marine main-engine air coolers, commonly called charge-air or scavenge-air coolers, remove heat from turbocharger-compressed intake air before it enters the engine. Cooling increases air density, supports efficient combustion, and reduces engine thermal loading.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Air Coolers for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Design and testing depend on the engine maker, vessel specification, and applicable class rules. Pressure-containing designs may use EN 13445, ASME Section VIII, or other agreed pressure-vessel standards. Material certificates, pressure tests, and inspection documentation are normally project-specific.
Class Approval Approval is application- and vessel-specific rather than universal. Marine charge-air coolers may be reviewed, surveyed, or certified under the rules of DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, or the vessel's nominated classification society.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install in the engine maker's specified orientation with supported piping, correct coolant flow, functional air and water vents, and unobstructed condensate drains. Use approved gaskets and tightening sequences. Flush piping and perform the specified leak or pressure test before commissioning.
Maintenance Tips Record air and coolant inlet and outlet temperatures and pressure drops. Clean fouled air-side fins and water passages using OEM-approved methods. Inspect for corrosion, damaged fins, blocked drains, gasket leakage, and coolant carryover. Pressure-test after repair or tube plugging.
Safety Notes Stop, isolate, cool, depressurize, and drain the cooler before opening it. Wear suitable PPE when using chemicals or compressed cleaning media. Coolant leakage into the air path can reach engine cylinders and cause corrosion, combustion problems, or hydraulic lock; investigate suspected leakage before operation.
