Piston Rods - Main Engine and Propulsion
A piston rod connects the piston to the crosshead in large low-speed marine propulsion engines, transmitting combustion force while maintaining alignment. It passes through the piston-rod stuffing box and is manufactured to engine-specific OEM dimensions and tolerances.
ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Piston Rods for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval
Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.
| Applicable Standards & Certification | Manufacture and inspection are governed primarily by the engine OEM drawing and specification. Material certificates may be supplied to EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 when required. Dimensional inspection, hardness testing and non-destructive examination requirements depend on the OEM and class-approved repair procedure. |
|---|---|
| Class Approval | For classed vessels, replacement or reconditioned piston rods may require material traceability, NDT reports and acceptance by the vessel's classification society, such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK. Requirements depend on engine criticality, repair scope and class rules. |
Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information
| Installation Notes | Confirm the exact engine type, serial number, cylinder position and OEM drawing revision. Check straightness, dimensions, threads, flange faces and oil passages before installation. Use specified tightening tools, locking arrangements, clearances and alignment procedures. |
|---|---|
| Maintenance Tips | Inspect the stuffing-box running surface for scoring, corrosion and wear. Check rod straightness, threads, flange faces and oil passages during overhaul. Perform dye-penetrant, magnetic-particle or ultrasonic examination as specified by the OEM, and record dimensional readings. |
| Safety Notes | Isolate starting air, fuel, hydraulic power and turning gear before work. Secure the piston and rod with certified lifting equipment. Piston assemblies are extremely heavy; follow approved lifting plans, confined-space procedures and OEM tightening instructions. |
