Piston Rod Stuffing Boxes - Main Engine and Propulsion
Piston rod stuffing boxes seal the crankcase from the scavenge space in low-speed two-stroke crosshead marine engines. Segmented sealing and scraper rings remove cylinder oil and contaminants from the piston rod while controlling gas and oil leakage.
ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Piston Rod Stuffing Boxes for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval
Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.
| Applicable Standards & Certification | No universal standalone dimensional standard applies. Stuffing boxes are manufactured to the engine OEM's drawings, material specifications and service limits, with applicable marine machinery and SOLAS safety requirements. |
|---|---|
| Class Approval | Normally accepted as part of the class-approved engine design rather than separately type-approved. Relevant engine installations may be surveyed by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA or other flag-recognized societies. |
Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information
| Installation Notes | Verify engine type, cylinder number, piston rod diameter and OEM part numbers. Install ring segments, springs and drain components in the specified order and orientation. Check rod condition, ring clearances, housing alignment and unobstructed drain passages using the engine manual. |
|---|---|
| Maintenance Tips | Monitor stuffing-box drains and crankcase contamination. During overhaul, clean the housing and drains; inspect sealing and scraper rings, springs and piston rod surface for wear, scoring, deposits or breakage. Measure clearances to OEM limits and replace worn components as matched sets. |
| Safety Notes | Stop and isolate the engine, engage the turning-gear interlock and follow confined-space and crankcase-entry procedures. Allow components to cool and relieve pressure before opening. Use approved lifting equipment and protect the polished piston rod from impact or abrasive damage. |
