Pistons - Main Engine and Propulsion

Marine engine pistons transmit combustion pressure through the connecting rod or piston rod to produce propulsion power. Large two-stroke crosshead engines typically use composite pistons with steel crowns, while medium-speed trunk-piston engines use designs specified by the engine OEM.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Pistons for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Pistons are manufactured and inspected to engine-OEM drawings, material specifications and approved quality procedures. Material inspection certificates may follow EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 when contractually required. Applicable requirements depend on the engine maker, vessel class and replacement-part approval basis.
Class Approval Acceptance may be required by the vessel's classification society, such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK. Main-engine pistons are generally approved as engine components through design review, material certification, inspection and survey rather than universal standalone type approval.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Confirm engine type, bore, build number and OEM part number. Measure piston, liner and ring clearances; install rings in the specified orientation with staggered gaps. Use approved lifting tools, lubricants, tightening values and piston-cooling connections specified by the engine maker.
Maintenance Tips Inspect the crown for burning, cracking and deposits; check ring grooves, skirt, piston rod, securing hardware and cooling spaces. Measure wear and clearances at scheduled overhauls, verify cooling-oil flow, renew rings as specified and retain dimensional records for trend monitoring.
Safety Notes Stop and isolate the engine, engage turning-gear interlocks, depressurize starting air and allow components to cool. Use certified lifting equipment because pistons are heavy. Follow confined-space procedures for crankcase entry and perform required crankcase inspections before restart.
