Crankshafts - Main Engine and Propulsion
A marine crankshaft converts piston reciprocating motion into rotary torque for the propeller or reduction gearbox. Main-engine crankshafts are precision-forged or semi-built components designed for high cyclic, torsional and bending loads.
ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Crankshafts for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval
Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.
| Applicable Standards & Certification | Crankshaft design and manufacture are generally assessed under IACS UR M53 and the applicable classification society rules for reciprocating internal-combustion engines. Material certificates, forging records, heat-treatment records, dimensional reports and nondestructive examination documentation are normally required. |
|---|---|
| Class Approval | Crankshaft drawings, strength calculations, materials and manufacturing inspections may be approved or surveyed by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA or another vessel-recognized classification society. Approval is engine-, manufacturer- and vessel-specific. |
Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information
| Installation Notes | Verify the exact engine type, cylinder count, rotation and serial number. Follow the engine maker's procedures for lifting, alignment, bearing clearances, axial clearance, coupling fit, lubrication and tightening. Record crankshaft deflections before and after installation. |
|---|---|
| Maintenance Tips | Regularly measure crankshaft deflection and bearing clearances, inspect journals and fillets for scoring or cracks, analyze lubricating oil, verify oil pressure and inspect thrust bearings. Use approved polishing or repair limits and perform NDT when required by the maker or class. |
| Safety Notes | Isolate starting air, fuel, electrical and turning systems before work. Engage the turning-gear interlock, secure moving components and use certified lifting equipment. Crankshafts are extremely heavy; follow an engineered lifting plan and never enter the crankcase until ventilation and safety checks are complete. |
