Starting Air Valves - Main Engine and Propulsion
Cylinder-head-mounted valve that admits compressed air into a marine diesel engine cylinder during starting. It is normally pilot-air operated and incorporates non-return action to prevent combustion gas from entering the starting-air manifold.
ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Starting Air Valves for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval
Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.
| Applicable Standards & Certification | Starting-air arrangements are governed by SOLAS Chapter II-1, applicable flag-state requirements, classification-society machinery rules, and the engine manufacturer's approved technical documentation. Replacement valves should match the approved engine design and OEM material, pressure and dimensional requirements. |
|---|---|
| Class Approval | Starting-air valves are normally accepted as part of the class-approved engine and starting-air system. Applicable societies may include DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas and ClassNK; individual certification requirements depend on vessel class, engine design and replacement scope. |
Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information
| Installation Notes | Confirm engine type, cylinder-head interface, valve dimensions and part number. Isolate and depressurize starting air, clean the seating surface, fit approved seals, tighten fasteners to OEM torque and verify pilot-air timing and leak-tight operation. |
|---|---|
| Maintenance Tips | Periodically inspect the spindle, guide, spring, piston and seat for carbon, corrosion, sticking, erosion and leakage. Clean and lap or renew seating parts only within OEM limits, replace worn seals and test free movement and tightness before service. |
| Safety Notes | Shut, lock and vent the starting-air supply before removal. Engage turning-gear and engine-start interlocks, verify zero pressure and keep clear of the valve outlet. A leaking or sticking valve can cause manifold explosion, unintended engine movement or hot-gas blowback. |
