Combustible Gas Detectors - Safety and Protection

Portable combustible-gas detectors are used aboard ships, offshore units and during ship repair to identify flammable gas concentrations before and during hot work, tank entry, cargo operations and enclosed-space work. They commonly use catalytic-bead or infrared sensors and provide audible, visual and vibrating alarms.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Combustible Gas Detectors for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Common requirements include IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-11 for explosive atmospheres, IEC 60079-29-1 for combustible-gas detectors, and applicable ATEX or IECEx certification. The exact certificate and gas performance depend on the detector configuration.
Class Approval Marine or hazardous-area acceptance is model- and configuration-specific. Some variants may have marine type approval or acceptance from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK; verify the current certificate before shipboard use.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Portable detectors require no fixed installation. Charge or install approved batteries, perform a visual inspection and bump test, then calibrate with certified test gas according to the manufacturer and vessel safety procedure. Position the instrument according to gas density and the sampling point.
Maintenance Tips Perform pre-use inspection and bump testing, periodic calibration, sensor response checks and battery inspection. Keep the inlet, filters and alarm openings clean. Replace sensors, filters and batteries only with approved parts and retain calibration records.
Safety Notes Use only equipment with suitable hazardous-area certification. Never rely on a detector with failed alarms, expired calibration or a depleted battery. Test atmosphere from a safe location where possible, avoid contaminating sensors, and follow the vessel's enclosed-space, hot-work and gas-freeing procedures.
