SCBA Cylinders - Safety and Protection

High-pressure breathing-air cylinders used with marine self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for firefighting, emergency escape, rescue, and entry into oxygen-deficient or toxic atmospheres aboard ships. Cylinders are commonly steel or composite, with typical working pressures of 200 or 300 bar.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply SCBA Cylinders for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Common requirements include EN 12245 for fully wrapped composite gas cylinders, ISO 11119-2 or ISO 11119-3 for composite cylinders, EN 144 valve interfaces, and applicable national pressure-vessel regulations such as TPED, PED, DOT or TC approval. Complete marine SCBA sets may require MED or SOLAS compliance.
Class Approval Approval depends on the cylinder design, pressure-vessel authority and complete SCBA assembly. Marine equipment may be accepted under MED or flag-state requirements, with DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK involvement where specified by the vessel, owner or flag administration.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Fit only to the manufacturer-approved SCBA valve, reducer and harness system. Verify cylinder pressure, connection thread, water capacity, inspection date and compatibility before installation. Secure cylinders against movement and protect them from heat, impact, oil and contamination.
Maintenance Tips Inspect regularly for corrosion, cuts, abrasion, impact damage, valve leakage and damaged markings. Keep cylinders clean and dry, store secured with protective caps, and refill only with certified breathing air. Perform periodic hydrostatic or visual inspections at the interval required by the approval authority and manufacturer.
Safety Notes Treat cylinders as high-pressure vessels. Do not exceed the marked working pressure, modify valves, use compressed oxygen, or expose cylinders to excessive heat. Open valves slowly, prevent oil or grease contamination, and remove any cylinder that has suffered severe impact or shows damage.
