Fire Extinguishers - Safety and Protection

Marine fire extinguishers are portable, approved firefighting appliances carried aboard ships and offshore vessels. Depending on the hazard, they use dry powder, foam, water, carbon dioxide, or wet chemical agents for accommodation, machinery, galley, electrical, and deck areas.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the IMO Fire Safety Systems (FSS) Code are applicable to shipboard fire-extinguishing appliances. Portable extinguishers are commonly tested or manufactured to EN 3, ISO 7165, or applicable national standards, subject to flag-state requirements.
Class Approval Approval requirements depend on vessel flag, service, and extinguisher type. Marine-approved units may be accepted by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, or other recognized organizations when supported by the required type-approval certificate.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install in marked, readily accessible locations near identified fire hazards and along escape routes. Secure the extinguisher against vibration, protect it from heat and weather, and maintain unobstructed access. Follow the maker's mounting instructions and vessel fire-control plan.
Maintenance Tips Inspect regularly for damage, corrosion, blocked hose, missing pin, low pressure, and illegible markings. Carry out servicing, weighing, recharge, hydrostatic testing, and replacement at the intervals required by the manufacturer, flag state, class, and applicable standard.
Safety Notes Use only the extinguisher type suitable for the fire classification. Do not use water on energized electrical equipment or flammable-liquid fires. Keep a safe escape route, discharge from a safe distance, and evacuate if the fire cannot be controlled immediately.
