Safety Data Sheets - Safety and Protection

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provide standardized information on hazardous marine chemicals, fuels, lubricants, paints, cleaning agents and cargoes. They support safe handling, storage, PPE selection, spill response, firefighting and emergency medical actions onboard vessels.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Safety Data Sheets for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Typically prepared according to the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS), ISO 11014, applicable national SDS legislation and REACH Annex II where applicable. Marine fuel safety data may also follow SOLAS Chapter VI and IMO MSC.286(86) requirements.
Class Approval SDS documents are generally not subject to type approval by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV or ClassNK. Classification societies may verify onboard availability and document-control arrangements during audits or surveys.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Maintain current SDS copies in the vessel's safety management system, onboard chemical register and relevant work areas. Provide access to crew and shore personnel, preferably in the vessel's working language.
Maintenance Tips Review SDS revisions whenever products, suppliers or formulations change. Remove obsolete versions, retain required records, and ensure emergency contact details and product identifiers remain legible and current.
Safety Notes Read the SDS before use and follow specified PPE, ventilation, storage and incompatibility controls. Do not rely on an SDS as a substitute for risk assessment, permit-to-work procedures or applicable shipboard emergency plans.
