Line Throwing Lines - Safety and Protection

Marine line throwing lines are lightweight, high-strength lines used with approved line-throwing appliances to establish a connection between vessels, ship and shore, or ship and rescue craft. They are normally supplied as part of an approved line-throwing apparatus or as an approved replacement.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Line-throwing appliances and their associated lines are generally required to comply with SOLAS 1974, as amended, Chapter III, the IMO Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) Code, and applicable IMO MSC.81(70) testing requirements. Replacement lines must match the approved appliance specification.
Class Approval Approval is normally associated with the complete line-throwing appliance through the flag Administration or applicable Marine Equipment Directive type approval, rather than with a generic loose line. DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, and ClassNK may accept approved equipment subject to applicable rules.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install only the line specified by the appliance manufacturer. Pack, route, and secure the line exactly as shown in the approved manual, ensuring it is free from knots, abrasion, moisture damage, and obstruction.
Maintenance Tips Inspect during scheduled safety-equipment inspections for fraying, contamination, mildew, chemical damage, and expired or damaged packaging. Replace immediately if defective or whenever the appliance manufacturer specifies replacement.
Safety Notes Use only with the approved line-throwing appliance and trained personnel. Keep clear of the firing direction and recoil area. Do not modify, shorten, splice, or substitute the line without manufacturer approval.
