SCBA - Safety and Protection

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) provides firefighters and emergency responders aboard ships with breathable air in oxygen-deficient, smoke-filled, or toxic atmospheres. Marine units typically use open-circuit compressed-air cylinders, positive-pressure full-face masks, and harness assemblies.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply SCBA for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Marine SCBA should comply with SOLAS Chapter II-2, the IMO Fire Safety Systems (FSS) Code, and ISO 23269-1 where applicable. Land-based models commonly use EN 137 Type 2, NFPA 1981, or equivalent national standards. Certification is model and market specific.
Class Approval Marine approval may be issued under applicable IMO/SOLAS requirements by authorities or classification societies such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, and ClassNK. Approval is product-specific and should be verified from the manufacturer's certificate.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Inspect the cylinder, valve, regulator, mask, harness, warning alarm, and pressure gauge before use. Charge cylinders only with clean breathing air using approved equipment. Secure cylinders in approved brackets and follow the manufacturer's assembly and pressure-test procedures.
Maintenance Tips Perform pre-use checks and periodic inspections according to the manufacturer and vessel safety-management system. Clean and disinfect the mask after use, inspect seals and hoses, test alarms, and hydrostatically test cylinders at the required interval. Keep cylinders protected from heat, chemicals, and corrosion.
Safety Notes Use only by trained personnel with a fit-tested mask and appropriate firefighting PPE. Never enter a hazardous atmosphere without a fully charged unit and standby team. Monitor cylinder pressure and exit before the low-air warning activates. Do not use oxygen or contaminated air for charging.
