EEBDs - Safety and Protection

Emergency Escape Breathing Devices (EEBDs) are compressed-air or oxygen-generating escape respirators carried aboard ships for evacuation through smoke, toxic gases, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. They provide short-duration respiratory protection and are not intended for firefighting, rescue, or re-entry.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply EEBDs for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Marine EEBDs are generally type-approved under IMO SOLAS requirements, the International Fire Safety Systems (FSS) Code, and IMO EEBD performance requirements including MSC.1/Circ.849, as applicable. ISO 23269-1 and EN 1146 may apply depending on product type and approval basis.
Class Approval Approval and acceptance may involve DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA, or other flag-state-recognized bodies. The exact approval depends on the model, flag administration, and applicable SOLAS type-approval certificate.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install in clearly marked, readily accessible locations along designated escape routes and in machinery spaces, following the vessel fire control plan and manufacturer instructions. Secure units against vibration, heat, moisture, and unauthorized removal. Confirm seals and inspection labels remain intact.
Maintenance Tips Carry out routine visual inspections, verify expiry dates, pressure indicators, seals, hood or facepiece condition, and storage-case integrity. Do not service, recharge, or replace components except through the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Replace immediately after activation or damage.
Safety Notes Use only for emergency escape and never for firefighting, rescue, tank entry, or re-entry into contaminated spaces. Donning must follow onboard training and the manufacturer's instructions. Do not remove the hood or facepiece in a contaminated atmosphere, and evacuate immediately after activation.
