Lifeboat Compasses - Safety and Protection

Lifeboat compasses are compact magnetic navigation instruments carried in lifeboats and liferafts for emergency direction finding when the vessel's main navigation systems are unavailable. They are designed for shock, vibration, weather exposure and operation without electrical power.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Lifeboat Compasses for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Applicable Standards & Certification Relevant requirements may include SOLAS 1974 as amended, the IMO International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code, and applicable flag-state or marine-equipment approval requirements. Magnetic compass design may also reference ISO 613, where applicable. Approval is model- and authority-specific.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install in the lifeboat's designated compass position or binnacle, away from ferrous materials, electrical equipment, radios, engines and magnetic tools. Secure it against shock and ensure the compass card remains freely visible and readable.
Maintenance Tips Inspect periodically for cracked housing, leakage, bubbles, clouding, damaged card markings and defective illumination. Keep the exterior clean, verify secure mounting, and replace or service the compass if its card movement is sluggish or readings are unreliable.
Safety Notes Use only equipment approved or accepted for the vessel's survival craft. Do not place magnets, steel tools, speakers or energized cables near the compass. Navigation checks and any deviation assessment should be performed by competent personnel.
