Gland Packings - Engine Room Consumables and Spares

Gland packing is a braided sealing material used in marine pumps, valves, shafts, and other rotating or reciprocating equipment. It reduces leakage by compressing within a stuffing box and is selected according to fluid, temperature, pressure, shaft speed, and equipment design.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Gland Packings for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification There is no single universal standard for all gland packings. Selection normally follows manufacturer data, equipment-maker requirements, applicable piping or machinery standards, and vessel class rules. Product-specific approvals or test certificates must be verified with the manufacturer.
Class Approval Generic gland packing is not normally class-approved as a standalone item. Approval or acceptance may apply to a complete pump, valve, stern-tube, or shaft-sealing system by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, or ClassNK.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Confirm packing material compatibility with the medium, temperature, pressure, and shaft speed. Clean and inspect the stuffing box, install rings individually with staggered joints, and tighten the gland gradually. Do not overtighten; pumps generally require controlled initial leakage for cooling and lubrication.
Maintenance Tips Inspect for leakage, overheating, shaft or sleeve wear, and gland follower position. Adjust gradually while equipment is operating safely. Replace packing when adjustment is exhausted, leakage remains excessive, or the shaft and sleeve require inspection.
Safety Notes Isolate, depressurize, drain, and lock out equipment before replacing packing. Use suitable PPE for hot, corrosive, toxic, or contaminated fluids. Never place hands near rotating shafts, and follow the equipment manufacturer's packing and operating instructions.
