Oil Rings - Engine Room Consumables and Spares

Oil rings, also called oil-control or scraper rings, are piston rings used in marine diesel engines to regulate lubricating oil on the cylinder liner. They scrape excess oil from the liner surface and return it through piston drainage passages to reduce oil consumption and prevent combustion-chamber fouling.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Oil Rings for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Piston rings are commonly specified and tested according to the applicable ISO 6621 series requirements, together with the marine engine manufacturer's drawings and material specifications. Exact compliance depends on the engine and supplier.
Class Approval Individual oil rings are normally supplied as engine-maker or approved replacement components rather than separately class-approved items. Acceptance may be subject to DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or ClassNK requirements for the complete engine and its critical spare parts.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Confirm engine model, OEM part number, cylinder diameter, ring width, ring orientation, and coating before installation. Clean the piston grooves and drainage passages, check ring end gap in the liner, and install without twisting or damaging the ring.
Maintenance Tips Inspect oil consumption, liner condition, piston-groove wear, ring end gap, and ring sticking during overhaul. Replace rings as a complete cylinder set when required by the engine maker, and store them dry in original packaging.
Safety Notes Use the engine manufacturer's overhaul procedure and approved ring-expander tools. Wear eye and hand protection, avoid forcing or overstretching rings, isolate and cool the engine before work, and prevent dirt from entering the crankcase or cylinder.
