Serpentine Belts - Engine Room Consumables and Spares

Serpentine belts are continuous, ribbed drive belts used on marine diesel engines to transmit power from the crankshaft pulley to alternators, seawater pumps, fresh-water pumps, air-conditioning compressors, and other accessories. They are common engine-room consumables and must match the engine manufacturer’s belt profile and length.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Serpentine Belts for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Ribbed belt dimensions and pulley interfaces may follow ISO 9981 and related manufacturer specifications. Actual replacement selection must follow the marine engine OEM part number, belt profile, rib count, and effective length. Individual belts are not generally supplied with a marine type-approval certificate.
Class Approval Individual serpentine belts generally do not require separate DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, or ClassNK approval. Classification requirements may apply to the complete engine or propulsion installation; use OEM-approved belts where specified.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Isolate the engine, remove the ignition or starting source, and allow rotating equipment to stop completely. Verify belt profile, rib count, length, pulley alignment, and tensioner condition. Install without twisting or using tools to force the belt onto pulleys, then set tension according to the engine maker's instructions.
Maintenance Tips Inspect routinely for rib wear, cracking, glazing, fraying, contamination, and abnormal noise. Check pulley alignment, tensioner movement, and idler bearings. Replace belts at the OEM interval or immediately after damage, and keep spare belts clean, dry, and protected from oil, fuel, heat, and sunlight.
Safety Notes Never inspect or replace a belt while the engine is running. Lock out starting systems before maintenance. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from rotating pulleys. Do not use belt dressing unless expressly approved by the engine manufacturer.
