Bilge Pumps - Auxiliary Machinery and Engine Room

Marine bilge pumps remove accumulated water, oil-contaminated drainage, and leakage from machinery spaces, holds, and bilge wells. Shipboard systems commonly use self-priming centrifugal, positive-displacement, or submersible pumps selected for required capacity, suction lift, and fluid compatibility.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Bilge Pumps for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Ship bilge systems are governed by SOLAS Chapter II-1 and applicable flag-state and classification rules. Electrical installations generally follow IEC 60092. ISO 8849 applies to electrically operated direct-current bilge pumps used on small craft. Product-specific compliance must be verified from the manufacturer.
Class Approval Bilge pumping arrangements may require approval by the vessel's classification society, such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or ClassNK. Approval applies to the selected pump, controls, piping arrangement, capacity, and vessel class; not every commercial pump model is individually type-approved.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install at the designated bilge suction or well with accessible strainers, isolation and non-return valves as required. Keep suction piping short, airtight, adequately supported, and correctly sized. Confirm priming, rotation, electrical protection, alarm interfaces, and required emergency suction arrangements.
Maintenance Tips Inspect and clean strainers, bilge wells, impellers, diaphragms, and non-return valves regularly. Check seals, bearings, couplings, suction leaks, corrosion, motor current, and automatic level controls. Test duty and standby pumps periodically and record discharge pressure or flow.
Safety Notes Isolate electrical and mechanical energy before maintenance. Treat bilge liquid as potentially oily, toxic, or flammable; use suitable PPE and ventilation. Never discharge oily bilge water overboard except through approved pollution-prevention equipment and in compliance with MARPOL and local regulations.
