DOL Starters - Electrical, Lighting and Power

Direct-on-line (DOL) starters are low-voltage motor control assemblies used aboard ships for starting and stopping fixed-speed motors. A typical assembly includes a contactor, thermal or electronic overload relay, short-circuit protection, control pushbuttons, and an enclosure.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply DOL Starters for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification IEC 60947-4-1 applies to contactors and motor starters; IEC 60947-2 applies to circuit-breakers. Shipboard installations may also require IEC 60092-302 and the vessel owner's electrical specification. Certification depends on the complete assembly and configuration.
Class Approval Marine type approval may be available for selected components or complete starter panels from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, and ClassNK. Approval is model-, enclosure-, application-, and installation-specific and must be verified from current certificates.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Select the starter for motor rated current, voltage, frequency, starting duty, fault level, control voltage, enclosure protection, and ambient temperature. Set the overload relay to the motor nameplate current and connect protective earthing and interlocks according to the approved ship electrical drawings.
Maintenance Tips Inspect terminals, contactor contacts, overload settings, enclosure seals, cable glands, and signs of overheating or corrosion. Test start/stop, emergency-stop, overload trip, and remote-control functions during scheduled maintenance. Replace worn contacts or damaged overload relays.
Safety Notes Isolate, lock out, and verify absence of voltage before servicing. DOL starting produces high inrush current and mechanical shock; confirm that the motor, shaft-driven equipment, generator, and distribution system are suitable. Use correctly rated short-circuit protection and maintain required electrical clearances.
