Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Ballast tank coating systems are commonly specified to IMO PSPC requirements under MSC.215(82). Surface preparation is generally referenced to ISO 8501-1, ISO 8502 and ISO 8503. Product-specific type approval and application requirements must be verified with the manufacturer.
Class Approval PSPC ballast tank coating systems may be reviewed or accepted by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK and other IACS classification societies. Approval is dependent on the complete coating system, application procedure, inspection records and vessel requirements.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Prepare steel by abrasive blast cleaning to the coating manufacturer's specified cleanliness and profile. Apply only within specified temperature, humidity and dew-point limits. Verify wet-film and dry-film thickness, recoating intervals, curing and tank-entry requirements before flooding the tank.
Maintenance Tips Inspect ballast tanks during scheduled dry-dock or tank inspections for coating breakdown, rusting, blistering and mechanical damage. Remove salt contamination and corrosion, repair damaged areas using the approved coating system, and record inspection and dry-film-thickness results.
Safety Notes Review the product safety data sheet before use. Provide forced ventilation, explosion-proof equipment and suitable respiratory, skin and eye protection. Control ignition sources, observe confined-space entry procedures, and confirm coating is fully cured before returning the tank to service.
