Capstan Gearboxes - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

Capstan gearboxes are high-reduction drives that transmit electric or hydraulic motor power to vertical or horizontal capstans used for vessel mooring and line handling. Marine versions are designed for high starting torque, shock loading, compact installation, and corrosive deck environments.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Capstan Gearboxes for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Gear rating may follow ISO 6336 or equivalent DIN standards. Corrosion-protection systems are commonly specified to ISO 12944. Final compliance depends on gearbox design, capstan duty, hazardous-area requirements, motor type, and vessel specification.
Class Approval Type or case-by-case approval may be required from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or ClassNK. Approval normally applies to the complete capstan drive and its documented materials, load calculations, braking arrangement, testing, and controls rather than every standalone gearbox.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Mount on a rigid, machined foundation; align the motor, gearbox, coupling, and capstan shaft within manufacturer tolerances. Confirm output rotation, oil grade and level, breather position, bolt torque, brake setting, guards, and deck sealing before commissioning.
Maintenance Tips Check lubricant level, leakage, abnormal noise, vibration, temperature, fastener tightness, seals, brake condition, and coating damage. Change oil at the maker's stated interval and inspect gear teeth, bearings, splines, and couplings during planned overhauls.
Safety Notes Isolate and lock out electrical or hydraulic power before work. Secure the capstan against rotation, release stored hydraulic pressure, and keep personnel clear of rotating parts, pinch points, and tensioned ropes. Never exceed the capstan's rated pull or holding load.
