Chain Lockers - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A chain locker is a reinforced compartment, normally located below the windlass in the vessel's forepeak, for stowing anchor chain. It guides chain loading, contains mud and seawater, and incorporates drainage, access, and a releasable bitter-end connection.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Chain Lockers for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Chain lockers are generally designed to the vessel's flag-state requirements, applicable classification-society hull rules, and IACS requirements. Associated stud-link anchor chain is commonly manufactured to ISO 1704 or relevant class rules. The locker itself is normally a ship-specific structure rather than a type-certified product.
Class Approval The design, scantlings, drainage, access, and bitter-end arrangement may be reviewed and surveyed by the vessel's classification society, such as DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA, or Korean Register, according to the vessel's class notation and approved drawings.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Install beneath and in alignment with the windlass and chain pipe. Provide adequate structural reinforcement, corrosion protection, drainage, safe inspection access, separation where required, and an accessible bitter-end release arrangement. Construction must follow approved vessel drawings and class requirements.
Maintenance Tips Regularly remove mud and scale, verify drains and suctions are clear, inspect coatings and steelwork for corrosion or deformation, and examine chain guides and the bitter-end securing arrangement. Repair coating damage promptly and confirm access covers remain secure and weathertight where applicable.
Safety Notes Treat the locker as a confined space: isolate chain movement, secure the windlass and brakes, ventilate, test the atmosphere, and follow permit-to-work and rescue procedures before entry. Keep personnel clear while paying out or heaving chain, and never stand beneath or beside moving chain.
