Rudder Stocks - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A rudder stock is the high-strength vertical shaft connecting a ship's rudder blade to the steering gear or tiller. It transmits steering torque and bending loads through bearings in the stern structure.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Rudder Stocks for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Designed and manufactured to applicable IACS Unified Requirements, including UR S10, and the vessel's classification society rules. Material testing, forging quality, machining tolerances, welding, and nondestructive examination are specified by the approved rudder design.
Class Approval Rudder stocks may be approved and surveyed by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA, or other IACS members. Approval is vessel- and design-specific and normally includes drawings, calculations, material certificates, NDT, and final inspection.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Verify approved drawings, stock alignment, bearing clearances, seal condition, and mating tapers or flanges. Use specified hydraulic fitting or tightening procedures and confirm free rudder movement before commissioning.
Maintenance Tips Inspect for corrosion, wear, scoring, cracking, seal leakage, and excessive bearing clearance. Perform periodic alignment checks and approved NDT at survey intervals or after grounding, collision, or abnormal steering loads.
Safety Notes Isolate and secure the steering gear and rudder before work. Support the rudder blade and stock with certified lifting equipment, follow confined-space and dry-dock procedures, and do not heat, weld, or machine the stock without approved repair instructions.
