Stern Thrusters - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A stern thruster is a transverse propulsion unit installed near a vessel’s stern to improve low-speed maneuverability, docking, undocking, and station keeping. Common arrangements include tunnel thrusters with fixed-pitch or controllable-pitch propellers driven by electric or hydraulic motors.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Stern Thrusters for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Design and installation commonly follow the vessel classification society’s propulsion and machinery rules. Electrical systems are generally designed to applicable IEC 60092 requirements. Equipment, materials, welding, shafting, controls, and testing requirements depend on vessel class and flag-state rules.
Class Approval Stern thrusters may be supplied with project-specific approval or product certification from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, RINA, or other recognized societies. Approval is not universal and must match the vessel, thruster model, drive rating, controls, and installation.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Locate the tunnel sufficiently below the lightest operating waterline and away from hull obstructions to limit air ingestion and thrust loss. Align and weld the tunnel to approved drawings, provide fair tunnel openings, verify motor and gearbox alignment, and commission controls, lubrication, seals, and thrust direction.
Maintenance Tips Inspect propeller blades, tunnel coatings, anodes, shaft seals, bearings, and gearbox oil at maker-specified intervals. Check for fishing-line damage, leakage, abnormal vibration, overheating, and oil contamination. Maintain electrical insulation, hydraulic systems, and control interlocks, and renew anodes before excessive depletion.
Safety Notes Isolate and lock out electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical energy before inspection. Prevent thruster operation while divers or personnel are near tunnel openings. Display appropriate warnings, verify guards and interlocks, and follow enclosed-space, dry-docking, lifting, and hot-work procedures.
