Pilot Hoist Winches - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A pilot hoist winch is a powered deck device historically used to raise or lower personnel during pilot transfer. Mechanical pilot hoists are prohibited for pilot transfer under SOLAS; compliant pilot ladders and approved combination arrangements must be used instead.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Pilot Hoist Winches for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 23 prohibits mechanical pilot hoists for pilot transfer. Pilot transfer arrangements are addressed by IMO Resolution A.1045(27), as amended, and MSC.1/Circ.1428. Pilot ladders are covered by ISO 799-1 and applicable SOLAS requirements.
Class Approval Mechanical pilot hoists are not accepted as SOLAS-compliant pilot transfer equipment. Flag administration and recognized organization requirements apply to the complete pilot transfer arrangement; approval for other lifting duties does not authorize personnel or pilot transfer.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Do not install or commission a mechanical hoist for pilot transfer. Remove or permanently disable legacy arrangements as required by the flag administration, and provide a compliant pilot ladder or combination arrangement with certified securing points and safe access.
Maintenance Tips For legacy equipment pending removal, isolate power, prevent unauthorized use and inspect for corrosion or loose components that could create deck hazards. Maintain the approved pilot ladder, securing points, lighting, lifebuoy and access arrangements according to SOLAS and manufacturer instructions.
Safety Notes Never use a mechanical pilot hoist to embark or disembark pilots. Pilot transfer must be supervised by a responsible officer, with communications, lighting, lifebuoy and safe access provided. Follow flag-state, port-state and classification requirements.
