Snatch Blocks - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A marine snatch block is a side-opening pulley block that allows wire rope or fiber rope to be inserted without reeving the rope end. It is used for temporary redirection, hauling and lifting operations on vessel decks and in shipyards.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Rigging blocks may be designed, marked, inspected and used in accordance with ASME B30.26 and applicable manufacturer requirements. Material certificates, proof-load certificates and traceability may be specified for marine or shipyard service.
Class Approval Individual blocks are not automatically class-approved. Where required by the vessel or lifting-appliance rules, certification, proof testing and survey may be accepted or witnessed by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Select a block with the correct working load limit, rope type and sheave groove diameter. Secure the attachment to a rated padeye or fitting, close and lock the side plate, and align the block to prevent side loading.
Maintenance Tips Inspect the sheave, pin, latch, hook or shackle, cheek plates and identification markings before use. Lubricate bearings as specified, remove salt deposits and corrosion, and withdraw blocks showing cracks, deformation, excessive wear or seized sheaves.
Safety Notes Never exceed the marked working load limit or use an unidentified block. Keep personnel clear of suspended loads, pinch points and the line-of-fire. Avoid shock loading, side loading, overcrowded hooks and rope diameters incompatible with the sheave groove.
