Windlass - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

A marine windlass is powered deck machinery used to lower, heave and secure a vessel's anchor chain or wire. Shipboard units are commonly electrically or hydraulically driven and may be combined with mooring drums or warping heads.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Windlass for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification ISO 4568 applies to windlasses and anchor capstans for sea-going vessels. ISO 3828 covers deck machinery terminology. Electrical equipment may be designed to applicable IEC 60092 requirements. Final design and testing depend on chain size, anchor mass, vessel duty and flag/class rules.
Class Approval Windlasses may be supplied with design review, product certification or survey acceptance from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK when required. Approval is project-specific and must match the vessel's class rules and certified anchoring arrangement.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Mount on a rigid, adequately reinforced deck foundation and align the chain wheel with the hawse pipe and chain locker. Fit approved holding-down bolts, chain stopper, guards, controls and hydraulic or electrical connections according to maker and class requirements.
Maintenance Tips Inspect brakes, clutch, chain wheel pockets, bearings, gears, seals and fasteners regularly. Lubricate at specified intervals, check hydraulic oil or motor condition, remove corrosion and test controls, brakes and emergency operation before anchoring.
Safety Notes Keep personnel clear of the chain, wildcat, drums and snap-back zones. Do not rely solely on the windlass brake to secure the anchor at sea; use the chain stopper and additional securing arrangements. Isolate and lock out power before maintenance.
