Hawsers - Deck Machinery and Hull Equipment

Hawsers are heavy-duty fibre or wire ropes used for ship mooring, towing and berthing. Marine hawsers are selected by minimum breaking load, construction, elongation, abrasion resistance and compatibility with deck fittings.

ProShipWorks provides end-to-end support to source and supply Hawsers for marine vessels, ship operators, industrial facilities, maintenance teams and procurement departments.

Standards, Certifications & Class Approval

Review the available standards and approval information relevant to the product. Actual certification, material traceability, inspection and classification requirements depend on the product type, intended application and purchasing specification.

Applicable Standards & Certification Applicable references include ISO 2307 for rope testing, ISO 9554 for general fibre-rope specifications, ISO 10325 for HMPE ropes and ISO 10572 for mixed-polyolefin ropes. Shipboard mooring selection and management commonly follow OCIMF MEG4 guidance.
Class Approval Product-specific type approval or certification may be available from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or ClassNK. Approval is not universal; verify the manufacturer's certificate, test data and vessel class requirements for the exact rope size and construction.

Installation, Maintenance & Safety Information

Installation Notes Confirm required design load, line diameter, length and deck-fitting compatibility. Use manufacturer-approved eye splices, chafe protection and bend radii. Avoid sharp edges and ensure fairleads, bitts, winch drums and stoppers are suitable for the rope material.
Maintenance Tips Inspect routinely for abrasion, glazing, cuts, pulled strands, chemical contamination and damaged eyes. Record service history and residual strength assessments. Clean with fresh water where appropriate, dry before storage and replace according to manufacturer or mooring-management criteria.
Safety Notes Keep personnel outside snap-back zones and away from loaded-line bights. Never stand astride a hawser or handle it near a running winch. Use controlled tensioning, suitable PPE and documented mooring procedures; retire any line showing critical damage or uncertain strength.
